The owner of a perfumery firm has filed an appeal to register the trademark of the embattled Yukos oil firm for a new line of perfumes.
Mikhail Sannikov, owner of the Sunny perfumeries production, wants to use the green and yellow triangle with the word YUKOS as the trademark for perfumes and at the same time express his solidarity with the jailed Yukos owner, former billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
“It’s a good name, I like it,” Sannikov told Vedomosti daily in an interview.
Sannikov says he realizes that the Yukos perfume line would have a narrow target audience, but making money does not come first in this particular project.
The main aim of the Yukos brand launch is to declare its owner’s political position: according to Sannikov, the arrest of Mikhail Khodorkovsky was a major negative influence on the business climate of Russia.
Khodorkovsky, former CEO of Yukos oil and gas company, was arrested in 2003, charged with tax fraud and evasion, and sentenced to eight years in prison. He may be released in 2011, if no new charges are filed against him. His arrest, the following trial and verdict attracted attention from various public figures and human right groups, both Russian and Western, who criticized the case as being politically motivated.
In 2006 Yukos was declared bankrupt and liquidated. Since 2007, Russia’s leader in oil production, Rosneft, has the rights for its trademark. However the trademark is registered for use with oil-related products, not with perfume products.
“If the launch of Yukos brand is the declaration of Mikhail Sannikov’s civil position, I’m willing to take my hat off to him,” a Ukrainian perfumery retailer David Tetruashvili told Vedomosti.
Tetruashvili however pointed out that so far, no “name” brand perfume has enjoyed significant success, with the exception of Curious by Britney Spears.

We have all walked past or worked around someone with loud smelling discount designer perfume on, and wondered what made them buy it in the first place. But, we each have our own likes and dislikes which makes us all unique. However, where is the glory is smelling like dirt? perfume distributors,Men Perfumed Soaps,is advertising strongly in women perfume magazines in an attempt to sell their own unique blend of perfumes. These are not blends that you might typically call exotic, but they are definitely different.
Dirt is one of the more popular scents that the best online selling perfumes line carries. Dirt isn’t just a unique name, it actually smells like dirt. Maybe if you grew up on a farm, or did a lot of gardening with your mom as a child, the scent might bring back some memories of time long gone. The question is, does a woman want to small like dirt? If you don’t like the smell of dirt, maybe grass is better suited for you. Yes, you to can smell like fresh cut grass all day long.
For the plant lovers brand fragrances created a perfume called Poison Ivy, that actually smells like the vine. How about Cannabis Flower, which is a perfect match to a marijuana plant in bloom. I don’t think it will fool law enforcement if someone gets the idea to use it as a cover up, but it will certainly get you some strange looks. I can see some teen now saying “no mom I’m not using drugs, it’s my perfume you smell”. Other odd lines of perfume gift sets includes: Black Pepper, Sushi, Mushroom, Laundromat, Wet Garden, Play-Doh, and many more. The smell of Play-Doh isn’t to bad, but I don’t know if it would make a good perfume.
For some pregnant women who crave weird things, might actually benefit from some of these odd creations. I don’t know that you’d want to smell like Dirt all day, but perhaps spraying a little in the room your in might settle your cravings. Some women do crave clay dirt during their pregnancy, and I’m certain smelling it is more healthier then eating it.

The precise formulae of commercial perfumes are kept secret. Even if they were widely published, they would be dominated by such complex ingredients and odorants that they would be of little use in providing a useful guide to the general consumer in description of the experience of a scent. Nonetheless, connoisseurs of perfume can become extremely skillful at identifying components and origins of scents in the same manner as wine experts [6].
The most practical way to start describing a perfume is according to the elements of the fragrance notes of the scent or the family it belongs to, all of which affect the overall impression of a perfume from first application to the last lingering hint of scent
Fragrance notes
Perfume is described in a musical metaphor as having three sets of ‘notes’, making the harmonious scent accord. The notes unfold over time, with the immediate impression of the top note leading to the deeper middle notes, and the base notes gradually appearing as the final stage. These notes are created carefully with knowledge of the evaporation process of the perfume.
* Top notes: The scents that are perceived immediately on application of a perfume. Top notes consist of small, light molecules that evaporate quickly. They form a person’s initial impression of a perfume and thus are very important in the selling of a perfume. Also called the head notes.
* Middle notes: The scent of a perfume that emerges just prior to when the top notes dissipate. The middle note compounds form the “heart” or main body of a perfume and act to mask the often unpleasant initial impression of base notes, which become more pleasant with time. They are also called the “heart notes”.
* Base notes: The scent of a perfume that appears close to the departure of the middle notes. The base and middle notes together are the main theme of a perfume. Base notes bring depth and solidity to a perfume. Compounds of this class of scents are typically rich and “deep” and are usually not perceived until 30 minutes after application.
The scents in the top and middle notes are influenced by the base notes, as well the scents of the base notes will be altered by the type of fragrance materials used as middle notes. Manufactures of perfumes usually publish perfume notes and typically they present it as fragrance pyramid, with the components listed in imaginative and abstract terms.
Olfactive families
Grouping perfumes, like any taxonomy, can never be a completely objective or final process. Many fragrances contain aspects of different families. Even a perfume designated as “single flower”, however subtle, will have undertones of other aromatics. “True” unitary scents can rarely be found in perfumes as it requires the perfume to exist only as a singular aromatic material.
Classification by olfactive family is a starting point for a description of a perfume, but it cannot by itself denote the specific characteristic of that perfume.
Traditional
The traditional classification which emerged around 1900 comprised the following categories:
* Single Floral: Fragrances that are dominated by a scent from one particular flower; in French called a soliflore. (e.g. Serge Lutens’ Sa Majeste La Rose, which is dominated by rose.)
* Floral Bouquet: Containing the combination of several flowers in a scent.
* Amber: A large fragrance class featuring the sweet slightly animalic scents of ambergris or labdanum, often combined with vanilla, flowers and woods. Can be enhanced by camphorous oils and incense resins, which bring to mind Victorian era imagery of the Middle East and Far East.
* Wood: Fragrances that are dominated by woody scents, typically of agarwood, sandalwood and cedar. Patchouli, with its camphoraceous smell, is commonly found in these perfumes.
* Leather: A family of fragrances which features the scents of honey, tobacco, wood and wood tars in its middle or base notes and a scent that alludes to leather.
* Chypre: Meaning Cyprus in French, this includes fragrances built on a similar accord consisting of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli, and labdanum. This family of fragrances is named after a perfume by François Coty. A notable example is Mitsouko (a popular name for girls in Japanese) by Guerlain.
* Fougère: Meaning Fern in French, built on a base of lavender, coumarin and oakmoss. Houbigant’s Fougère Royale pioneered the use of this base. Many men’s fragrances belong to this family of fragrances, which is characterized by its sharp herbaceous and woody scent.
Modern
Since 1945, due to great advances in the technology of perfume creation (i.e., compound design and synthesis) as well as the natural development of styles and tastes; new categories have emerged to describe modern scents:
* Bright Floral: combining the traditional Single Floral & Floral Bouquet categories.
* Green: a lighter and more modern interpretation of the Chypre type.
* Oceanic/Ozone: the newest category in perfume history, appearing in 1991 with Christian Dior’s Dune. A very clean, modern smell leading to many of the modern androgynous perfumes.
* Citrus or Fruity: An old fragrance family that until recently consisted mainly of “freshening” eau de colognes due to the low tenacity of citrus scents. Development of newer fragrance compounds has allowed for the creation of primarily citrus fragrances.
* Gourmand: scents with “edible” or “dessert”-like qualities. These often contain notes like vanilla and tonka bean, as well as synthetic components designed to resemble food flavors. An example is Thierry Mugler’s Angel.
The Fragrance wheel is a relatively new classification method that is widely used in retail and in the fragrance industry. The method was created in 1983 by Michael Edwards, a consultant in the perfume industry, who designed his own scheme of fragrance classification. The new scheme was created in order to simplify fragrance classification and naming scheme, as well as to show the relationships between each of the individual classes[9].
The five standard families consist of Floral, Oriental, Woody,Fougère, and Fresh, with the former four families being more “classic” while the latter consisting of newer bright and clean smelling citrus and oceanic fragrances that have arrived due to improvements in fragrance technology. With the exception of the Fougère family, each of the families are in turn divided into sub-groups and arranged around a wheel.

New Delhi:- Even though America’s famous magazine for men Playboy is banned in India the brand has forayed into the Indian market Wednesday by launching their perfume range for men.
“Indian people love international brands and there is a sense of excitement associated with our brand name. So our brand name is our strength and our aim will be to blend into the Indian market keeping our international standards in mind,” Venkatesh Babu, regional managing director of the US based fragrance company Coty Beauty that looks after distribution of various perfumes all around the globe told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
Coty Beauty is the business unit of Coty Inc that has signed an agreement with Indian company J.L. Morison that will market and distribute Playboy perfumes in India.
“Our strategy is simple, initially we are focusing on the distribution of our perfumes in departmental stores across India and reach to as many cities as possible,” Babu said.
The four new fragrances that will be available in the Indian market are Hollywood playboy, Malibu playboy, Miami playboy and Vegas playboy with each fragrance capturing the essence of the lifestyle of some of the world’s most glamorous cities.
Babu felt that though the market is tough but with their strong brand name, affordable prices and good distribution networking, things will fall in place for them.
“The mass market in India has a large potential for international brands at the right price point offering. Our strategy for India through our partners, who have strong distribution infrastructure, will help us garner respectable market shares in the first year. We look at being leaders in the men’s deodorant and fragrance category with our brands in a few years,” Babu explained.
Talking about future plans, Coty Beauty’s head of Asia, Fons Houtkamp said that after launching this fragrance in US and some parts of Europe six months back, they are now channelizing their energy in the Asian market.
“We provide value for money and after launching here, our focus is to make our presence felt in the other Asian countries as well,” Houtkamp said.
The deodorants are priced at Rs.199 and can go up to Rs.595.

Perfume is a very personal thing that gives an individual his/her unique identity. Most of the people wear their favorite perfume throughout the year in and year out. But there are also so many mind rocking men’s women’s perfumes in the market that by sticking to the same one they are keeping themselves away from a multitude of intoxicatingly ravishing perfumes.
Sometimes choosing a perfume can be quite confusing as one person’s favorite can be another person’s headache. A short visit to the perfume store will open innumerable options and this makes your instinct to choose the right fragrance for you more difficult. Friends can help, but no one would prefer disclosing their favorite perfume brand as everybody wants to have a distinct smell unique to their personality. Moreover the choice of perfume always depends upon whether it suits your skin or not. You should try different perfumes on your skin before deciding on the one that best suits your personality.
Many people love to wear perfumes according to the seasons of the year. There are some perfume lovers who change their perfumes as often as the weather; and why not? Changing seasons bring to mind the memories of particular smells. By using the seasons as your perfume inspiration you’ll have a varied collection of scents to take you through the year.
Bring back your charm in the winter season by wearing warm spicy fragrance or rock the party season by calling for the more decadent men’s women’s fragrance. Hot summer days call for light fresh floral fragrances like the Davidoff perfumes or Ghost Sheer Summer. As summer turns to autumn a woodier richer scent is the order of the day, with fragrances such as Hugo boss perfume, Armani perfumes like Armani City Glam She, and Dolce gabbana perfume Feminine etc.

When our forefathers gave names to Pesach, they never imagined that in addition to the Festival of Matzah, the Festival of Freedom and the Festival of Spring, this holiday would also be called the Festival of Perfumes. Perhaps the coming of spring makes people want to buy new fragrances, because perfume sales rise significantly in the days preceding Pesach.
Sources at the SuperPharm drugstore chain estimate the Israeli perfume market at NIS 670 million annually, and that over 750,000 bottles of perfume are purchased in the week preceding Pesach, with each perfume customer buying an average of two bottles. Danny Luzon, vice president of commerce at SuperPharm, says women tend to buy perfume more often than men, out of a desire to be trendy, and therefore buy 50ml bottles. Israeli men, on the other hand, are more faithful to brands and buy the fragrance they are used to, usually in 100ml bottles.
Perfume marketers shift into high gear, with special offers starting about two weeks before Pesach, and customers spray samples to try new fragrances. This year again, however, there are no discounts on the priciest luxury brands – you won’t find any special offer signs beside Gucci and Chanel perfumes. Those brands will always be expensive.
To find out which stores are offering the best deals on perfumes to mark the holiday, TheMarker visited a branch of each of the leading chain stores and checked the types of discounts. We compared the prices of eight randomly chosen perfumes for men and eight for women, at SuperPharm, New-Pharm, Hamashbir Lazarchan, April, duty-free stores and the Call Perfume Web site.
This drugstore chain is offering up to 70% discount on 350 perfumes sold in five price categories: NIS 100, NIS 150, NIS 200, NIS 250 and NIS 300. Prices are clearly marked on all the products and we saw a few shoppers using NIS 50 gift vouchers distributed by the chain last month, for use on purchases over NIS 150. Sometimes you can find double discounts.
There are two types of offers on perfumes at this chain. Regularly priced perfumes are “buy one get the second for NIS 1″ (the lower priced of the two). If you don’t want two bottles, perfumes purchased singly are 40% off. Several brands of perfumes are specially priced in three categories – NIS 199, NIS 249 and NIS 299, but of course there are no double offers here. If you buy two reduced price perfumes, you won’t be able to buy the second one for NIS 1. To avoid unpleasant surprises at the checkout, pay attention to shelf signs regarding which offer applies to the fragrances of your choice.
Put on your math whiz cap before entering this store. Leading perfumes are up to 50% off for the general public, and “365 Club” members receive a further 20% discount on the discounted prices. Shoppers not equipped with a cell phone that doubles as a calculator will have to ask the sales staff for help in calculating the final price. Not all the perfumes are on sale at 50% off, so look for the discount signs for each brand.
Some popular perfumes are discounted up to 70%, but shoppers at the store we visited in Dizengoff Center will have difficulty figuring out exactly how much they will have to pay. The regular price stickers are on each product, but the discount on each brand is not displayed on the shelves, so you will have to ask the cashier.
All prices at the duty-free stores are in dollars, so it’s worth taking a few moments to convert the price to shekels, to avoid surprises at the checkout. The shekel prices are based on the exchange rate published daily by the Bank of Israel. The duty-free stores’ commitment to the lowest prices includes a promise that if you find a perfume at a lower price in Israel, the store will reduce its own price and compensate the customer. A special price-tracking system checks the specials at all the chains. In addition to the low prices, when you buy three perfumes at duty-free stores, you receive the fourth (lowest-priced) bottle free, so the overall price is even less. The only problem is that in order to shop at a duty-free store, you first have to buy an airline ticket or find someone traveling abroad who will shop for you.
This Web site offers a wide variety of perfumes at various discounts, sometimes even on perfumes that are no longer available in Israel. Call Perfume has been marketing perfumes online in Israel for about 10 years, importing directly from distributors around the world. The (Hebrew-Russian) site is user-friendly and you can find your favorite perfume by searching the men’s or women’s categories or the lists of brands. Another way to find a perfume is to answer three questions, based on which the site produces a list of suitable fragrances. The questions concern the recipient of the perfume (man/woman), the group of fragrances to which the perfume belongs (woody, flowery, refreshing etc.) and the desired style (feminine, romantic, sporty, dynamic, elegant, stylish etc.). The search engine then reduces the list and makes selecting a fragrance easier, if you are still undecided. The perfumes are sent free of charge by registered mail, or by courier, within 72 hours, for a NIS 25 express delivery fee, regardless
of the total cost or the number of items purchased.
A comparison of specific perfume prices found discrepancies of tens of shekels between one chain and another, and especially between the most expensive chain, duty-free and the Web site. Call Perfume and the duty-free stores offer the lowest prices, so if you are not planning a trip abroad but still want a new bottle of perfume, online shopping is the most worthwhile.
The Health Ministry has no testing and approval procedure for perfumes. This means that none of the perfumes sold to the public have been tested by the ministry, even those sold by drugstores and direct importers. The difference between the two is that retail chains buy perfumes from the manufacturers’ official importers, while the direct importers buy from the manufacturers’ distributors. These distributors have agreements with the manufacturers, forbidding the sale of merchandise to any interested party, and any such sale is a breach of their contract. The distributors get around this violation of their agreements by removing identifying labels from the crates.
We will not deny that the Web sites or stores that sell perfumes by direct import can deceive consumers and sell counterfeit perfumes, but anyone familiar with the scent of the perfume and the shape of the bottle will recognize the difference immediately. TheMarker ordered perfumes from Call Perfume twice in the past few months, and in both instances received original perfumes in the original packaging.
